Counseling and hypnotherapy for men across Whatcom County

Ian Whitelaw is a Washington State Registered Hypnotherapist based in Bellingham who works one-on-one with men across Whatcom County. Sessions combine talk-based counseling, practical tools and hypnotherapy, and take place online by secure video or phone, so men in Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine and rural areas can take part without driving into town.

This may fit if

  • You live outside Bellingham and the drive is one more reason to put it off.
  • You would rather nobody in your town saw you walking into a counselor's building.
  • Your work hours, farm chores or kids leave little room for an extra trip.
  • You want to talk with a man who lives and works in Whatcom County too.

Do I have to come into Bellingham?

No. I am based in Bellingham, but all my sessions are online, by secure video (Zoom) or by phone. You can join from your kitchen table in Everson, your truck on a pullout near Sumas or a quiet room at work in Ferndale.

The one rule is about location: sessions are for men who are located in Washington State at the time of each session. If you live in Whatcom County and work across the border, plan your sessions for a time when you are on the Washington side.

Why do men across the county put off asking for help?

Many men wait until stress has been building for months. MedlinePlus describes how long-running stress can become so normal that you stop noticing it is a problem, while it shows up as poor sleep, aches, low energy or drinking to relax.

Outside the city, there can be extra reasons to wait. Some men don't want their truck seen parked outside a counselor's door in a small town. Others can't spare the time to drive in and back. Online sessions remove both of those, and the first step is just a phone call or an email.

What do men in Whatcom County bring to sessions?

The topics are the same ones men bring anywhere, shaped by life up here. My sessions are a place to talk about them plainly. Some common ones:

  • Work stress, long hours and shift schedules that leave little left for home.
  • Relationship strain, separation and being a steady dad.
  • Frustration and a short temper, and wanting to feel calmer.
  • Grief, big life changes, retirement and feeling stuck.
  • Worry and nervousness that keep you up at night, where hypnotherapy may help you relax.

A note for farm country

  • Washington's Department of Ecology describes dairy farms and berry growing as the main farming around Lynden, Everson and Nooksack. If your days run on milking times or harvest, we can look for session times that fit around them within my weekday hours.

How do I start?

What kind of support do you offer?

I use talk-based counseling, cognitive behavioral tools, guided meditation and relaxation, and hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is a calm, focused state. You stay aware and in control, and many men find it a simple way to let their body settle. The hypnotherapy page explains what a session is like, and the page on counseling for men explains how I work with men.

I am a registered hypnotherapist, not a licensed mental health counselor or a doctor. If you are dealing with severe or constant low mood, panic or heavy drinking, please see your doctor or a licensed mental health professional. My sessions can sit alongside that care.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911. Ian Whitelaw Counseling for Men is not an emergency service.

Common questions

Which towns in Whatcom County do you serve?

All of them, because sessions are online. That includes Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Everson, Nooksack, Sumas and the rural parts of the county. What matters is that you are located in Washington State during each session. There are separate pages for Ferndale and Lynden.

What if my internet is slow out in the county?

Phone sessions are always an option. If your video keeps freezing, we can switch to a phone call partway through. Some men drive to a spot with better signal and talk from their parked vehicle, which also gives them privacy from the house.

Do you offer men's groups in Whatcom County?

Not through this practice. I have training and hands-on experience with men's groups, retreats and workshops, but the sessions I offer here are one-on-one only. That keeps what you say between the two of us, which can make the first step easier.

Is it really private if I live in a small town?

Yes. There is no waiting room and nobody sees you arrive. You join from a place you choose, and you can ask me on the introductory call exactly how I keep your information private. I suggest headphones and a closed door, or a parked car if the house is busy.
