This may fit if
- You know your stuff, but your voice shakes when you present it.
- You hold back in meetings and kick yourself afterward for not speaking up.
- You say yes to things you do not want to do because no feels too hard.
- You avoid applying for the job, asking the question or starting the project.
- An old voice from growing up still tells you that you are not good enough.
What does low confidence look like for men?
It rarely looks like a man saying he lacks confidence. More often it looks like staying quiet, putting things off, or turning down chances before anyone else can. The NHS describes how low self-esteem can lead people to avoid social situations, stop trying new things and steer clear of challenges.
The NHS also points out the catch: avoiding hard things feels safer in the short term, but in the long run it backs up the doubts you already have. Each time you step back, the rule that you cannot handle it gets a little stronger. My work with you is about taking small steps the other way.
How can hypnotherapy help with self-doubt?
In hypnosis you are deeply relaxed and focused, and Cleveland Clinic explains that this state can make you more open to suggestions about changing how you think, act or respond. I use that relaxed state for rehearsal. You picture the situation you dread, the presentation, the interview, the hard talk with your boss, while your body stays calm and your breathing stays slow.
I want to be honest about the evidence. Cleveland Clinic notes that many of the benefits people describe are anecdotal and that researchers are still learning how hypnosis works. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health also describes much of the research on hypnosis as limited or not conclusive. Many men find rehearsal in a calm state useful, but I cannot promise how it will go for you.
If you would like the basics first, my hypnotherapy in Bellingham page covers what hypnosis is and is not.

What about public speaking and pressure at work?
When the worry is public speaking, we start with the moment itself: walking to the front of the room, the first sentence, the faces looking at you. In hypnosis you rehearse that moment slowly, a few times, with a steady body. Between sessions you practice a short breathing routine you can do in a hallway before you go in.
I use the same approach for job interviews, sales calls, a performance review or asking for a raise. If part of the problem is finding the words, my page on communication has practical tools for saying what you mean.
What do we work on between sessions?
Hypnosis is one part. I also use cognitive behavioral tools and plain conversation, and some of the most useful work happens on your own time. The NHS suggests several of the same steps I use:
- Write down the harsh things you tell yourself, then write evidence that does not fit them.
- Keep a short list of things you are good at and things others value in you.
- Practice saying no in small ways, so yes means something.
- Set yourself one small challenge each week and notice that you did it.
How do we get started?
Old messages from growing up can sit under self-doubt, and the NHS notes that low self-esteem often begins in childhood. Inner child work, in my sessions, means looking at the messages you already remember and deciding which ones you still want to believe. If low confidence comes with low mood that will not lift, please also talk to your doctor or a licensed mental health professional.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 or call 911. Ian Whitelaw Counseling for Men is not an emergency service.
- An introductory callCall or email me, or use the contact form. We talk briefly about what is holding you back and whether my approach fits. You can read about my background on the about page first.
- Pick one situationIn the first session we choose one real situation to work on, such as a meeting, a talk or a conversation you keep avoiding. Starting small makes it easier to notice change.
- Rehearse in hypnosisI guide you into a relaxed, focused state and we rehearse that situation going the way you want it to. You stay aware and in control the whole time and can stop whenever you like.
- Try it for realYou take one step in real life before the next session, and we talk about what happened. Then we pick the next step.
Common questions
Is low confidence something I should just push through?
Pushing through works for some things, but if you keep avoiding the same situations, avoidance may be keeping the doubt alive. Talking it through and practicing in a calm state is a way to take smaller steps instead of one big leap. Many men find that easier than waiting until they feel ready.
Can hypnosis make me act like someone I am not?
No. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything against your will, and you stay aware the whole time. The aim is not a new personality. It is to let more of the steady, capable man you already are show up when the pressure is on.
Do I need to be in Bellingham for sessions?
No. All my sessions are online, by secure video (Zoom) or by phone, for clients who are located in Washington State at the time of each session. Men in Bellingham, around Whatcom County and elsewhere in Washington work with me the same way.
How much does it cost?
You will find current costs on my fees and insurance page. I am out of network with insurance plans, but I can give you a superbill, an itemized receipt you can send to your plan for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Whether your plan pays anything back is up to them.
