This may fit if
- Your days are long, and busy season leaves nothing left for yourself.
- You carry the weight of a farm or family business and rarely talk about it.
- You would rather keep it private in a town where people know each other.
- You can't easily get away for an hour plus a drive to Bellingham.
Can I talk with you without leaving Lynden?
Yes. All my sessions are online, by secure video (Zoom) or by phone. You can join from the house, the shop, the cab of your truck or anywhere you can talk privately. No drive into Bellingham, and nobody sees you come or go.
Sessions are for men who are located in Washington State at the time of each session, so if you cross the border for work, book for a time when you are on the Washington side. I offer sessions Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm Pacific. More on setup and privacy is on the online sessions page.
What if my work runs on the farm's schedule?
Lynden sits in farm country. Washington's Department of Ecology describes dairy farms and berry production, mostly raspberries with a growing share of blueberries, as the main farming on the land around Lynden, Everson and Nooksack.
If you farm, work on a farm or run a business that depends on one, you know how the work never fully stops. Milking times, weather, harvest and money can all press at once. MedlinePlus notes that stress that goes on for weeks or months can become so normal that you stop noticing it, while it shows up as poor sleep, aches, short temper or drinking to relax.
We can look for session times that fit around your work within my weekday hours, and keep a session to phone only if that is easier from the field or the barn.

What do Lynden men bring to sessions?
Anything that is weighing on you. Common topics include:
- Work pressure, money worry and the feeling that it all rests on you. Hypnosis for stress covers one way I help men wind down.
- Working alongside family, and the tension that can bring at the dinner table.
- Being a calm, present dad when you are worn out. See parenting and family.
- Big changes, such as stepping back from the work, handing it on, retiring or starting something new.
- Relationship strain, separation or grief.
How do I get started?
- Reach outCall or email me, or send a message through the contact page. You don't need to explain everything up front.
- Introductory callWe talk about what is going on and whether my way of working fits. You can read about me first, including my Washington hypnotherapist registration.
- First sessionWe talk plainly about what is hardest right now. I use cognitive behavioral tools, guided relaxation and hypnotherapy where they fit, and you leave with one practical thing to try.
- Find a rhythmWe agree how often to meet, and we can pause during your busiest weeks if you need to. Costs and superbills are on the fees page.
What should I know about your role?
I am a registered hypnotherapist, not a licensed mental health counselor or a doctor. In hypnosis you stay aware and in control the whole time. It is a calm, focused state, not sleep, and it is a support rather than medical care.
If low mood, panic, heavy drinking or not being able to work keeps going, please also talk with your doctor or a licensed mental health professional. My sessions can sit alongside that care.
If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911. Ian Whitelaw Counseling for Men is not an emergency service.
Common questions
Is this only for farmers?
No. I work with Lynden men from every line of work, plus retirees and men between jobs. Farming is mentioned here because it is so much a part of the land around Lynden, and it brings its own pressures. Whatever you do, you are welcome to reach out.
What if my internet out on the farm is unreliable?
Phone sessions are always an option, and they don't need any internet. If we start on video and it keeps freezing, we can switch to a phone call partway through. All you need is a private spot and a phone with signal.
Do you see men from other parts of Whatcom County?
Yes. Because sessions are online, I work with men across Whatcom County, including Bellingham, Ferndale, Everson and Blaine. The Whatcom County page has more. The one location rule is that you are in Washington State during each session.
Will anyone in town find out I am talking to you?
Online sessions keep it low-key. There is no waiting room and no car parked outside anywhere. You choose where you join from. On the introductory call you can ask exactly how I keep your information private, and I suggest headphones and a closed door if others are home.
