This may fit if
- You work rotating shifts and your sleep never quite catches up.
- You come home wound up and your family gets the leftovers.
- A big stretch of overtime is coming and you are already dreading it.
- You want to talk to someone, but not where anyone in town would see you.
Can I see you without driving to Bellingham?
Yes. All my sessions are online, by secure video (Zoom) or by phone, so you can join from home in Ferndale, from your truck in a quiet lot or from anywhere private. There is no drive down the freeway and no waiting room.
Sessions are for men who are located in Washington State at the time of each session. I offer them Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm Pacific. Read more about how online sessions work.
What if I work shifts?
Ferndale sits close to the Cherry Point industrial area. Washington's Department of Ecology describes the Phillips 66 Ferndale Refinery as located about five miles west-southwest of the city and running 24 hours a day all year, apart from planned turnaround periods. Round-the-clock work like that, at the refinery or elsewhere, often means rotating shifts.
If that is your life, you know what it does to sleep, family dinners and your patience. MedlinePlus lists trouble sleeping, low energy, a stiff jaw or neck and using alcohol to relax among the signs that stress may be affecting you. Long stretches of overtime can stack those up fast.
We can look for session times that fit your rotation within my weekday hours, such as a day off or before a night shift. Phone sessions are an easy option if you are tired of screens.

What do Ferndale men bring to sessions?
Whatever is weighing on you. Some common ones:
- Work stress, overtime and feeling like you never fully switch off. See burnout in men for more on this.
- Sleep that has gone sideways from shifts or worry, where guided relaxation and hypnosis for stress may help you wind down.
- Short temper at home and wanting to be a calmer partner and dad.
- Relationship strain, separation or grief.
- Feeling stuck, or wondering what comes next in your 40s, 50s or 60s.
What does a session look like?
- Reach outCall or email me, or use the contact page. A short message is fine.
- Introductory callWe talk about what is going on and whether my approach suits you. You can read about me first, including my Washington hypnotherapist registration.
- Talk it throughIn a session we talk plainly about what is hardest right now, and I use cognitive behavioral tools to look at the thoughts that keep you wound up.
- Practice something you can useWe may finish with a guided relaxation or hypnotherapy, and you leave with one practical thing to try before next time, such as a short wind-down routine after a shift.
What should I know before booking?
I am a registered hypnotherapist, not a licensed mental health counselor or a doctor. In hypnosis you stay aware and in control the whole time. It is a calm, focused state, not sleep. It is a support, not a replacement for medical care.
If you have panic, constant worry, heavy drinking or low mood that is getting in the way of work or home, please talk with your doctor or a licensed mental health professional too. I am out of network with insurance, and costs and superbills are on the fees page.
If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911. Ian Whitelaw Counseling for Men is not an emergency service.
Common questions
Do you only work with refinery and plant workers?
No. I work with men in Ferndale from every kind of job, as well as retirees and men between jobs. Shift work is mentioned here because round-the-clock work is part of life near Ferndale, and it can be hard on sleep and family time. Whatever you do for a living, you are welcome.
Can I do a session on my break or in my truck?
Yes, as long as you are somewhere private, located in Washington and not driving. A parked vehicle can work if you don't have a quiet room at home. Headphones help. If you can only manage a phone call, that is fine too.
Do you serve the rest of Whatcom County too?
Yes. Because sessions are online, I work with men across Whatcom County, including Bellingham, Lynden and Blaine. The Whatcom County page covers that in more detail. The only location rule is that you are in Washington State during each session.
Should I wait until a turnaround or busy stretch is over?
You don't have to. Some men find it helps to have a plan in place before a long run of overtime, rather than trying to start when they are already worn out. If your schedule changes for a few weeks, we can pause and pick up again when things settle down.
